How to tap an NFC business card on iPhone and Android

Step-by-step: how to read an NFC business card on iPhone and Android, where the NFC reader is, and what to do if nothing happens.

Short answer

On iPhone XS or newer, wake the screen and hold the card near the top edge of the phone. On Android, make sure NFC is on in settings and hold the card near the middle of the back. A notification or link appears; tap it to open the profile. If nothing happens, scan the QR code instead.

iPhone

  1. Unlock or wake the screen.
  2. Hold the card flat against the top back edge of the iPhone, near the camera.
  3. Tap the notification that appears.

iPhone XS, XR and newer read NFC cards automatically. Older models (iPhone 7–X) can use the NFC reader in Control Center on supported iOS versions — or just scan the QR.

Android

  1. Open Settings and search for NFC; switch it on.
  2. Unlock the phone.
  3. Hold the card near the middle of the back of the phone for a second.
  4. The profile opens or a prompt appears.

If nothing happens

  • Remove thick or metal phone cases.
  • Move the card slowly around the back of the phone — readers sit in different places.
  • Make sure the screen is on and unlocked.
  • Scan the QR code with the camera.
